Sunrise and the Eucalypts
2024, Wannaruah Country
Commissioned in 2024 by Singleton Council for their new Public Art Trail. Installed on the New England underpass, at the junction of John and Queen street, Singleton, Wonnarua Country.
This work speaks to the observed relationships and connections that exist between the trees and plants that reside in the dynamic bushland of the Hunter region. Trees form an archway along the river, the slaty gum sheds its bark imperfectly in short multicoloured ribbons heralding a new season of growth, the Grey box matures with its fibrous-flaky bark at eye level to smooth grey bark above, and the mottled unique shapes and colours of the spotted gum, change vibrantly as the rain accentuates its colours.
Connecting to the diverse community of people that call Singleton home, the symbol of the sun represents the turn of day, the times before or after work, where we tune in and notice change. Sitting at home, walking outside or on the homebound commute in the car. The symbol of a sunrise or set connects us to time, where we notice change, our bodies engage with this transition time, rest time, return to family time. As the sky turns orange, and the shadows emerge.
