Carries Place mural

Carries place is a domestic violence and homelessness service where feminism, social justice, capacity building, and social inclusion at the heart of all that they do.

A community mural project for Carries Place to make the refuge more of a home. During this project I worked alongside the resident women- mothers, grandmothers and children to collaboratively design and install a mural to run along the hallway of their refuge. Together we made collages using coloured cardboard referencing local native plants. We looked at the shapes and patterns of wildflowers, because wildflowers are resilient, strong and beautiful just like all the people in this place.

We used these shapes to design the mural to run along both hallways of the home, to transform the space into a much more welcoming environment for the ever transient nature of this space.

This project was made possible through the workers at the refuge and Outfit Newcastle.
