The Corner Store Gallery. October 2014. Orange NSW
This series of works explore memories and experiences gathered from working and living in a village in remote West Java. Ellie reflects on her experiences through the use of pattern, colour and symbols and juxtaposes imagery and symbols associated with her village surrounds in Java with various elements that she missed from her Australian lifestyle.
Returning to Australia in early 2014 Ellie had spent 3 years travelling throughout South East Asia and Eastern Europe; during the year of 2013 Ellie based herself in West Java Indonesia where she spent her time collaborating with an artist community building an art centre in a rural village, This art centre received finalist awards in the 2013 Australian council “Australian Artists in Asia Award”.
A fresh and enriching love for her addiction to art was intensified during these travels through experiences such as working with other artists and communities of varying creative fields, and finding delight in the unpredictability of what materials, people and venues she came across to work with.
